Sports Adhesives

Sports Adhesives and the Sports Enthusiast

Participants from every sports discipline demand a great deal from their equipment, particularly if they’ve paid for the high-end stuff. So, when a big brand puts its name on a product and sponsors a high profile professional athlete to endorse it, sports fans buy into the hype and trust that they’re getting quality goods.

Even the highest paid NBA player relies on a pair of shoes that will protect his feet from the hardwood — while not coming unglued.

Sports Adhesives Make Repairs Possible

From hockey players to weightlifters to snowboarders, today’s most successful athletes are faster, stronger and more skilled than ever before. In addition to the pressure they put upon themselves to achieve more, they put an equal amount of pressure on their equipment.

Basketball players have special footwear (without adhesives, their shoes would lack shape and structure); hockey players customize their sticks (with an adhesive tape that sticks and stretches); and snowboarders repair and personalize their boards (with polyurethane adhesives to repair cracks and adhesive board skins to identify cool graphics).

With most sports equipment (like hockey skates, snowboards, baseball bats), bonding adhesives and epoxies are commonly used to ensure a flawless performance — even under extreme conditions of use such as heat, cold, pressure and vibrations. In order to determine which adhesive will work best for your particular needs, refer to our handy online Glue Guide.

Too Much of a Good Thing

“An apology is the super glue of life.”

Sticky situations are a fact of life. Prior to the ban imposed in 1981, ‘sticky’ substances like glue or rosin (tree sap) were rumored to be commonly used by players in the National Football League to improve their grip on the ball. Oakland Raiders defensive back Lester Hayes and Hall of Famer Jerry Rice were called out for using a glue-like substance to improve their stats.”

Whenever any adhesive is applied and made to perform against its intended purpose, compromises are made and the integrity of the product is challenged. With every application, make sure you’re using the right adhesive for the task at hand, follow the application instructions, and keep out of reach of children.

Quality Adhesives for RC Model Airplanes | Zap

Quality Adhesives Build Model Airplanes

Building Radio-Controlled Airplanes with Quality Adhesives

Building a RC (radio controlled) model aircraft from scratch takes dedication, patience and attention to every single detail. There are no shortcuts to get to the final product and there shouldn’t be. Similarly, none should be taken with the all-important adhesive that binds it all together.

Whether you are starting out with an ARF (almost ready to fly) RC airplane or you have ventured into balsa and plywood aircraft, one thing is certain, your plane needs to be able to handle the stress and pressure of flying. Just as you would need to keep your measurements down to a tee, your choice of glue can make or break the delicate balance of the aircraft. Aerodynamics is a tricky beast and every aspect of your airplane must be just right in order to fly at an optimum level.

How Do You Pick the Right Adhesive?

To get it right the first time, your choice of glue has to be relevant to the type of model aircraft you are building. For example, nowadays, ARF airplanes incorporate more foam and plastic so an ideal choice would be Zap-O Foam Safe CA for foam parts and Poly Zap for plastic parts. On the other hand, if you are creating a composite airplane with light woods such as balsa or plywood, then select Zap-A-Gap. For post applying adhesive to balsa wood joints use the wicking grade ZAP CA. For canopy assemblies on cockpits use ZAP ‘s Formula 560 Canopy Glue which dries crystal clear and remains flexible.

How About the Engine?

No problem. Zap has got you covered. For thread locking fluid, also known as securing nuts and bolts by applying adhesives to fasteners, there is the Z-42 Thread Locker. This product has the ability to resist vibrations and prevent fasteners from loosening, which provides stability to the aircraft’s engine. Think of the engine as the heart of the plane and the glue as the blood flow that keeps the airplane running smoothly and as one cohesive unit.

Zap adhesive products not only apply to the initial building process of the composite aircraft but to the maintenance and repair process as well.

How Important is the Quality of Adhesive for My RC Model Airplane?

Zap adhesive products are a testament to hobbyists who take themselves and their crafts seriously. Considered one of the highest quality adhesives for any recreational activity, Zap has time and time again proven itself to be the choice for model builders who spend countless hours perfecting their craft.

Picking the right adhesive to match your composite RC aircraft should be one of the first steps in the planning process because as you know, it’s mighty difficult to go back once you’ve made a mistake.

Much like a car engine that requires premium quality oil to run, when it comes to providing the right glue or adhesive, there can be no substitutes. That feeling of satisfaction and pride when your model aircraft successfully flies can be in part attributed to you picking the correct tools and equipment for the job.

 A Hobby is a Passion

Part of our mantra at Zap is that a hobby is a passion, and passion is what life is all about. We consider it a privilege to be lost in that moment of anticipation as you concentrate on gluing that one final piece. It is what we call a “being in the zone” and there is no other place you would rather be.

The process of creating a model aircraft, piece by piece, is as much of a joy to the builder as is the moment when the plane takes off for the very first time.

Whether it is radio-controlled aircrafts, miniature railway tracks, model boats or plastic figurines, every set has a piece that needs to be put together with care and dedication. Simply put, the love that is put into your project can only be matched by the quality of resources used to create it. Start now by choosing one of our premium quality adhesives at Zap.

Scrapbooking Adhesives Front Porch Treasures

Scrapbook Adhesives | Front Porch Treasures

Front Porch Treasures puts a super fun twist on scrapbook adhesives, especially if you’re into scrapbooking. And these days, who doesn’t enjoy a little scrapbooking?

Scrapbooking became a huge hit between 2001 and 2004, with over $2.5 billion in sales and 1,600 companies creating scrapbooking products for a growing number of hobbyists (or “scrappers”) who created their own social network to share their creative ideas.

Digital scrapbooking has added more functionality to the traditional scrapbook as interest in this highly involved craft remains high – across the board:

• Over 4 million women in the United States alone consider themselves to be scrapbookers.

• Over 4% of all women in U.S. have done traditional scrapbooking. Millions of others do various aspects of photo books but are not scrapbookers.

• Scrapbooking is one of the largest categories within the craft and hobby industry and now considered to be the third most popular craft in the nation. From 1996 through 2004, sales of scrapbooking products increased across the United States. In 2005, annual sales flattened for the first time after many back to back years of double growth. From 2006 through 2010 traditional scrapbooking sales have declined, while digital forms of scrapbooking have grown. Traditional scrapbooking sales for 2010 have declined to about $1.6 billion in annual sales from a peak of about $2.5 billion in 2005.

Add Pop, Punch, Depth and Dimension to Your Creative Projects

Scrapbook adhesives like the Front Porch Treasures dots are easy to handle and worry-free because all of the products are double-sided, acid-free, lignin free, photo-safe and permanent.

The mounting foam squares and dots come in a variety of sizes and they work great on invitations, pop-up books, and of course — scrapbooking.

DIY Decorative Mosaic Tray

A mosaic tray can add creative flair to any coffee table or desk for a personal touch. Best of all, you won’t have to break the bank to make one. With your favorite bowl, Bondini glue, and some old CDs, you can create a beautiful custom mosaic tray for your home with these simple steps.

Materials

-Plate or bowl
-Bondini glue
-Old writable DVDs
-Kitchen shears
-Gloss (optional)
-Grout

Directions

1. First, you will need to separate the layers of the DVDs. It is important to use DVDs for this project, as CDs only have one layer. Using the kitchen shears, cut from the edge of the DVDs to the center. Repeat on the other side, cutting the DVDs in half. Gently lift apart the two layers. Continue to work your way all the way around the DVD: you should be left with a thin silver layer to use for your project.

2. Once the layers are separated, cut the DVD halves into 6 or 7 equal pieces as if you were cutting a pizza—however, leave the ends attached to the inner ring of the DVD to prevent the shards from flying. Then, tear the pieces gently from the inner ring.

3. If your tray is going to be displayed outside, you will need to spray the DVD pieces with gloss in order for them to retain their reflectiveness. Otherwise, the reflective coating will wash off in the elements.

4. Adhere the DVD pieces to the edge of the tray with a dab of Bondini glue. Be careful not to get any glue on the reflective surface.

5. Carefully apply grout between the pieces, using a damp rag to wipe off the excess. The grout will protect you from being cut by the sharp edges, and will also add another layer of protection if you plan to leave the tray outside.

Right On Cue

Ball with cue and chalk

If you tried to rack up all of Super Glue’s abundant amount of uses, you’d discover that, interestingly enough, the game of pool makes the list. Chocked full of skill, finesse, and strategy, pool is played, professionally and recreationally, by many people. Those who do play on a regular basis are no strangers to the issue of worn leather pool cue tips and their need for replacement. For a money-saving, D.I.Y trick, ZAP-A-GAP CA+ adhesive from Super Glue, can be used to effectively secure a new tip to the stick. That being said, let’s take a cue from the glue and dive into the step-by-step details of how this repair can be done.

Things You’ll Need

-Razor blade/knife
-2 types of sandpaper-medium grit & fine
-The new pool cue tip
-Nail polish remover
-Paper towel
-Pool cue tip clamp (optional)
-Tip shaper tool (optional)

Cue Tip Replacement

The first step to cue tip replacement, is to remove the old one. To do this, carefully use the sharp knife or razor blade to cut off the worn/broken tip. Once that is done, you will need to prepare and clean the ferrule. The ferrule is the part (typically made of metal or horn) located at the end of the cue shaft, where the tip is attached. Use your cutting tool to gently remove old glue from the top of the ferrule. Then use a piece of medium grit sandpaper on this area to make sure it is smooth and even.

Next, take your new cue tip and place the flat end on top of a piece of fine grit sandpaper. Without using too much force or pressure, briefly glide the bottom of the tip over the paper to get it smooth.

After those steps of preparation have been completed, you can move on to attaching the new cue tip. To do this, simply take the ZAP-A-GAP CA+ and apply a small amount that covers the surface end of the cue shaft. Next, attach the new tip flat side down. Press firmly, but not excessively hard, and quickly make adjustments to center the cue tip.

The glue will most likely pour out a little on the sides, but don’t worry. Using a bit of nail polish remover on a paper towel, clean off any extra glue that remains. extra care not to get the nail polish remover on top of the new tip, as that can be detrimental to its structure.
Let the newly glued cue stick sit for at least an hour before handling. For firmer and more secure tip placement, you can put on a pool tip clamp. Lastly, use the fine grit sandpaper once again to smooth the edges of the tip. And if the tip is slightly large and/or needs reshaping, you can use tip shaper tool or the sandpaper to perfect it.

What’s Your Unique Super Glue Story?

From fixing pool cue tips to repairing musical instruments, Super Glue products are constantly being used in helpful and innovative ways. Whether you’ve used them in a handy everyday repair, or in a unique application that’s way out of the left corner pocket, so to speak, we’d love for you to share your story on our Facebook page. There is so much in the news about drones and all of the different uses for them, from warfare to home delivery of packages, today.  As with many “new concepts” this is actually just a new twist or extension of something hobbyists around the world have been involved with for decades.  Remote Control (RC) Airplanes, Cars, and Helicopters have an entire industry and cult following that hobbyists have participated in building, flying, and competing in enthusiastically over many, many years.  Super Glue Corporation has been working with these hobbyists, and collaborating along side of them, developing highly technical super glues, epoxies, threadlockers and a wide range of other adhesives specifically for their purposes, since the beginning.

Zap adhesives, specifically ZAP Threadlockers and ZAP CAs (cyanoacrylates or super glues) are two longstanding favorites of these hobbyists.  We also have foam safe products, super glues and kickers, that work great on foam based models.

Here is a terrific video for anyone interested in getting started with building Drones, RC Airplanes & Helicopters:

Super Glue Corporation treated employees along with their families, and all of its local vendors, to a day at Universal Studios recently.  Over 360 people attended the fun-filled day!  A picnic lunch was served in an amazing star-studded dining room with Shrek videos looping non-stop for the kids!  All of the incredible attractions were available to us (Animal Actors and Special Effects shows were two favorites) and a great time was had by all!

High quality products and excellent customer service are two key features of Super Glue Corporation, a privately held, American based, manufacturing company, and how better to breed, and exemplify, that corporate philosophy than by treating employees like they are gold … what goes around comes around with customers treated like they are gold as well by each and every employee at Super Glue Corporation!

How lucky we are, too, that our corporate headquarters is in Rancho Cucamonga, California not far from this terrific Hollywood Theme Park!  A place that seems to have the same philosophy about high quality products and excellent customer service as Super Glue Corporation does — we were treated like gold and had a grand experience!

Super Glue Corporation is home to many brand name adhesives products like The Original Super Glue(R), ZAP(R), ProSeal(R), Pacer(R), Front Porch Treasures(R), and Bondini(R) and we know that our cyanoacrylates (super glues), epoxies, contact cements, silicone sealants, and many other products are critical to creating much of the magic we see in movies!

Check out this blog we wrote awhile back about how they used super glue and baking soda to make snow in the Universal Studios distributed movie, Coraline!  And check out this blog about the many masks used in making the 3D feature animation, Paranorman, and how they used super glue to strengthen each one!  Again, what goes around comes around ….  We appreciate their products (Universal Studios Theme Park) and they appreciate ours (Super Corporation Adhesives)!

So … a special day, indeed!  Fun to be with our work family and our real family, in the same place at the same time …. and fun to see the magic, our products help to create, in action!

Hey, Students!  As you begin brainstorming your science fair project ideas be sure to think about how you might incorporate The Original Super Glue brand products into your plans!  We are always interested in helping budding scientists reach for their dreams, AND our product development team is always interested in new and unique ways our products are being used.

Some project ideas, like this Soda Bottle Magnetometer used to “monitor changes in the Earth’s magnetic field for signs of magnetic storms”  just use super glue to build the project’s monitoring device whereas other project ideas may be about the actual super glue itself (such as comparing the holding power of super glue or epoxies to other adhesives).  Either way — we want to help you out!

If you need super glue products to use for a science project simply send us your request for “Science Fair Project Super Glue Products” along with your name,  and the products you need (supplies may be limited), and we will send you some sample products.  If you’ve used our products in a science fair project before, and have a picture, or description, of the how the products were used, send us that as well and we may use your story in our blog (and send you some sample products).
