Dr. Harry Coover, inventor of Super Glue, passed away on March 26, 2011 at his home in Kingsport, Tennessee.  According to Elizabeth A.  Harris with The New York Times, Dr. Coover’s daughter, Dr. Melinda Paul, confirmed that Harry Wesley Coover was born on March 6, 1917 (not 1919 as some reports state) making him 94 years old when he passed away this weekend.

Super Glue Corporation representatives (Marcia Littler and Ron Gravette, pictured here with Dr. Coover) were thrilled to join Dr. Coover’s family members, and Eastman Chemical Company colleagues, at a gala honoring the National Science and Technology Medals Foundation’s  2009 National Medal of Technology and Innovation Laureates on Tuesday evening, November 16th, 2010, in Washington DC.

The National Medal of Technology and Innovation is the United States government’s  “highest honor for technological achievement bestowed on American innovators by the President of the United States.”  Dr. Coover received the award for his invention of  “cyanoacrylates – novel adhesives known widely to consumers as ‘super glues’ – which today play significant roles in medicine and industry”.

The November 16th Gala literature states about the program,   “It recognizes those who have made lasting contributions to America’s competitiveness, standard of living, and quality of life through technological innovation, and to recognize those who have made substantial contributions to strengthening the Nation’s technological workforce.  The Medal also seeks to inspire future generations of Americans to prepare for and pursue tehnical careers to keep America at the forefront of global technology and economic leadership.”

A brief video history of Dr. Coover’s super glue discovery was presented at the gala.

Super Glue Corporation representatives also captured some interesting interview time with Dr. Coover the morning after the gala, in November 2010.  The interview covers a range of topics including the following: Dr. Coover’s response to The Original Super Glue(R) Corporation’s iphone app; Dr. Coover’s love for his family and his animals; Dr. Coover’s interest in following new developments in science and technology; Dr. Coover’s concerns for the future of the United States’ leadership role in science, technology and math, and much more!

We were thrilled to know Dr. Coover!  His invention created an entire industry and continues to help solve many sticky problems for creative producers around the world.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his wonderful family members.
